A loud crack in the undergrowth snapped her attention to her surroundings. In the sunbeams glimmering through the trees, she spotted the flick of a bronze-red bushy tail as a fox scurried through the undergrowth. Overhead, the avian chorus was tuning up.

The world was waking; time to make tracks.

The turmoil in her mind in no way addressed, Kitty trudged home to the Hall, greeting the staff already busy in the domestic quarters, when she passed.

“Good morning,” she hailed those therein.

“Isn’t it a mite cold for you to be outdoors so early?” Mrs Wilderby asked.

“’Tis wonderful. Cool, calm, and quiet.” Kitty poked her head around the door and winked.

“Breakfast is still a ways off. Would you like some hot buttered toast?” Alice, the Marchmains’ cook offered.

“That would be most welcome. I confess my stomach is protesting at its emptiness.” As she had done regularly when officially the governess, Kitty began preparing the toast herself, to be shooed to the massive table by Alice.

“Go on with you, my lady. Take a load off and Mary here will see to it.” Alice nodded to the young maid who did as she was bidden with alacrity.
